Meet Rafia Usmani

Rafia is an experienced graphic designer and calligrapher; where she mainly focuses on Kufic and Naskh scripts in her designs with traditional elements and illumination in modern compositions. She initially learnt and practised calligraphy as a student and later progressed to doing a Master's degree in Fine Arts with Calligraphy from Pakistan. She has designed various calligraphy paintings and logos for professionals, companies and wedding invitation cards. Her inspiring work has received various medals and accolades and was displayed in 13 exhibitions between the years 2014 to 2019. This includes twice in Sharjah's Calligraphy Biennial in United Arab Emirates (2012, 2014). She moved to the United States in 2014; where she currently does commission works and logos. She hopes to participate in an exhibition there.

Kufic and Naskh script with modernized illumination. Bold colours and shapes with gold and black using acrylics and ink on paper centralizes the message and elements of illumination generates continuity of the theme.

This painting in mixed media with ink, focuses on the first five verses of Quran written in a Naskh script with a heart and circular design. It is enclosed by the first three letters using earth tones with a hint of gold beautified by a simple garland.
